5 THINGS You Need to Know When Hiring a Marketing Company

Sometimes there are good reasons why working with some people doesn't work out, but as a marketing agency ourselves, we think it's unfortunate to hear how some of the MedSpa owners we talked to were taken advantage of, weren’t given a good service or just ended having a terrible marketing experience. These transactions give us a bad reputation, and as business owners, it is frustrating to know this is something that happens more often than it should. Which is why we want to help you avoid these situations by being prepared to find your marketing match. Keep reading five critical aspects to consider when choosing your marketing dream team.

So, what do you need to make an educated decision when it comes to choosing the right marketing company for you, you ask? Let's talk about critical things you must keep an eye out for to avoid unfortunate results.

1. "If you don't have a plan, you become part of somebody else's plan."

Before starting the interviews and hiring process, you want to define where do you want your business to go. Six years from now, where do you want to be? What do you want your brand to accomplish? What are your goals? You must have a real clear mind of what you are looking for by hiring a marketing agency - and no, "grow your business" isn't clear enough!- 

When you talk to a marketing agency, they should be asking you questions in that first meeting.  The top-priority to discuss should be building a plan- after knowing your particular needs- instead of just selling the marketing services. If they are not trying to dig deeper and discover all about your business, and long term plans, you should reconsider and start talking with someone else! 

2. Work with someone that specializes in your field.

There’s a lot of marketing agencies out there, but you can't compare marketing to electronics to the food industry, let alone aesthetics professionals or any specific service. 

Believe it or not,  you can shorten the list of potential candidates by choosing your business niche.  You can even go farther and niche your niche! Get someone who specializes in your practice and the clients you are looking for after setting your goals. The market moves & evolves so fast every day! You must team up with someone who's committed to your specific area of practice, and keeps updated to avoid staying behind. 

Think about specialized marketers like having a head start on the game. They already battle-tested strategies. They know what worked, and what didn't. 

3. It's not me; it's you.  Make sure you work with someone you like & trust. 

Having someone who cares about you & your business is vast.

You already went through all this research. You want it to result in a good, prosperous,  long term relationship. Knowing you’re going to work a lot of time and quite closely with your marketing agency, you WANT to like these people. But more than that, you want to make sure you TRUST them since they’ll be learning all about your business, it’s needs, and grow a love for it!

Make sure they know YOU, what you like and what you don't, what you expect, and what your goals are. Share core values, be comfortable around each other. Feel like your marketing team is a long-distance friend!  

4. Are we in this together? Aligned strategic partnership 

You need someone who holds themselves accountable for a bit more than just sending leads or designing pretty ads. Success goes beyond these actions! Is the agency generating organic results in your business? Are you getting new patients from the strategies implemented? 

Look for someone who will work together for the full cycle with you- Someone who knows the phases of your business, and knows how to implement strategies properly where needed.

Work with someone who'll give you exclusivity to ensure a competitive advantage for you. Your marketing agency should be fully committed to work with you in a 200% level, that's why it is essential you are an exclusive at least in your area of practice even if you are paying a little more premium-dollar. Trust me; it's worth it when you see the results.  

5. Are you meant to each other? You need some proof. 

Don't be ashamed to ask for some evidence about the agency's work! Ask them for reviews & results. You know you want to see the results they had with other businesses that offer the same things that you do. 

Remember, your agency hunting is most likely an interview to reach for the correct prospect.

One last and essential advice for you: Look at the contracts, and make sure you protect yourself. It's unfortunate, but also possible that you don't get the results you are looking for, and paying full payroll doesn't sound like an investment. You and your marketing agents must be fully aware of the results measurement, and actions to take if any situation arises.
